"Cholesterol screening is currently the gold standard for predicting heart attack risk, but nearly half of all heart attacks occur among men and women with normal cholesterol levels," notes Paul Ridker, a cardiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Does this surprise you? Most people are shocked to learn how little correlation there is between elevated cholesterol and heart attacks. Let's look at the benefits of cholesterol, why some may experience elevated cholesterol, and heart attack markers that are more accurate in predicting heart attacks than cholesterol levels.

"Good" cholesterol?
We typically talk about blood lipids in terms of total cholesterol: LDL (bad) cholesterol and HDL (good) cholesterol. We use the relative values of each of these fats in our blood to determine where we stand in terms of disease risk. Unfortunately, these numbers are misleading in half of the cases, leading to a false sense of alarm or security.

Cholesterol serves as the raw material from which your body makes many hormones. Vitamin D is made from cholesterol and many life-ending diseases are associated with a deficiency of Vitamin D.

In truth, all cholesterol is good in the proper balance - even LDL! Cholesterol-rich tissues such as brain cells rely on the fats delivered by LDL in order to function at their best. LDL brings the cholesterol from the liver to the place where it is needed; HDL carries unused cholesterol back to the liver for storage, recycling or excretion.

Why cholesterol levels rise
Increased demand The most common reason why cholesterol levels rise is to supply an increased demand. For example, when your body needs to nourish brain cells or build hormones or Vitamin D, special messengers will be sent to request cholesterol release from the liver to meet the demand for this important raw material. Once your needs have been met, your body should reduce cholesterol production. However, with unrelenting stress and unyielding demands on our limited resources, the message to stop producing cholesterol may never get through.

Stress
Stress is one common reason why cholesterol levels rise.

Low-fiber diet
Another reason is that we eat a low-fiber diet. Cholesterol is recycled from the liver through the bile into the intestines and back to the liver. In a diet with minimum fiber levels (under age 50: 25 grams for women, 38 grams for men; over age 50: 21 grams for women, 30 grams for men) the excess levels of cholesterol will be absorbed and eliminated. In low-fiber diets the cholesterol is reabsorbed and recycled. The system becomes "closed" and levels rise.

Hypercholesterolemia
A third, less common reason for elevated cholesterol levels is fatal familial hypercholesterolemia - a rare genetic condition that causes cholesterol levels to rise uncontrollably. Statin medications were designed to combat this condition.

Reducing cholesterol and heart attacks
As mentioned at the outset, cholesterol levels alone do not serve us very well as determinants of heart attack risk. Homocysteine (HCY) levels are much more accurate in predicting who is at risk, and C-Reactive protein (CRP) is the best predictor for heart attack (as well as many other really bad conditions!).

The new research found out that 2 out of 3 people who have undergone a weight loss diet regimen lose 5 to 10 percent of their body weight. But measuring the effect of diet to people in a longer term (2 to 5 years), the research suggests that these people are better off not dieting at all because the weight loss during the first few weeks or months of dieting is gain after some time, and more. The bottom line is, majority of people who are taking one type of weight loss diet cannot simply lose weight and avoid gaining pounds permanently.

Why diets do not work?

 

  1. First. Most people on a diet cannot sustain the type of lifestyle and eating habits that a diet program requires. The result of this is people to go back to their former eating pattern and lifestyle pattern after they have already achieve their target weight. Obviously, the result is gaining more weight than they actually had before.
  2. Second. People have a short willpower. It may be strong at the beginning but will eventually fade as time goes on- as they realize that going on a diet is not actually as easy as they think it is. Of course, the strength of willpower differs from one person to another. This is the reason why there are people who can actually maintain a weight loss diet program for 1 year and there are people who can only maintain it for few months. Nonetheless, willpower is a big factor that dictates someone whether to continue loosing weight or not.
  3. Third. It is hard for people on a weight loss diet to maintain a strict eating habit/pattern if they see others eating the type of foods they have to let go. In other words, the people around them contribute to failure of diet. If you are familiar with the reality show, “The Biggest Loser”, you will see how hard it is for one person to go back to his/her real world. Surely, they have worked so hard to lose weight but after they were sent home, emotional stress sets in and they easily give up their new habit just to blend in.
  4. Fourth. People give up dieting and revive their former lifestyle to avoid stress. Old habits die hard especially if we love it so much. So, no matter how dedicated a person is to his or her weight loss diet, there is a great temptation that he or she will eventually give up because keeping an old habit out of the system is simply stressful.

The right thing to do�

Doctors suggest that diet is not the solution to a weight loss and achieving a normal weight, staying healthy is. What does staying healthy means? It means making correct choices on food to eat. Balanced food intake is a must as well. The FSA suggests that people, in order to stay healthy, should eat more fruits and vegetables; more protein-rich foods like pulses, eggs, meat and fish; more starchy foods such as bread, pasta, potatoes, and whole grain rice; less sugar, fat and salt.

On the final note, diets are not totally effective but it does not mean that weight loss diets are totally useless. As the research suggests, a small portion of people actually maintains their current weight after diet. It is up to each individual to totally dedicate him/herself with the type of lifestyle and habits that dieting requires. But remember that eating right, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is still the best combination if you want to stay healthy without placing your body into a great deal of stress with erratic changes in weight.

You must ensure that your weight loss program is successful. Eat right, strength train and cardio right? Well yes, but there is another aspect that is equally important as those three, and It is rest, and this is why…

Most people think they are building muscle when they are in the gym. You pump some iron and your muscles look big right? Well in fact, you are doing the opposite,you are breaking down muscle. The reason the muscles look big at the time is because they are full of blood, it’s called “pump”. You are really ripping and tearing your muscles during your workouts, that’s why you are sore the next day. So when are you building muscle? Actually its while you are asleep and resting the next day. When you lift you use the protein in your muscles, so when you are done you need to replenish them with proper nutrients and let them rest so they can rebuild. This process begins right after your workouts with a proper meal and continues with proper sleep that night and rest the next day. There is some research that suggests that your muscles are not fully recovered for up to 72 hrs after a hard strength training routine. This does not mean you have to wait 3 days between lifting, but hitting the iron hard again the next day will mean that your muscles have not returned to the state they were in before the last workout. So if you break them down some more the next day it will take them that much longer to get back to normal, then longer to build up from the original starting point two days ago. You can avoid some of this by doing split routines (different body parts on different days) but if you do total body workouts and you train everyday you are actually doing more harm then good. I’d recommend at least one day of rest between total body workouts.

With cardio, the thought process of most people is they have to get in their fat burning zone (it is usually marked in BIG letters on your elliptical!!!) so they can shed those extra pounds. Well, sorry to disappoint, but you burn very little fat while exercising. It is the increase in metabolism caused by the exercise that will last through the day and into the night that is burning the fat. Again diet plays a vital role with this as the proper meal post workout will help your metabolism stay up longer so you can burn more fat. This sounds counter productive but it is true, you need to eat and rest to reach your goals of weight loss.

Too much strength training and cardio can lead to what is known in the biz as “over training”. Over training is when your body does not get enough rest and all progress with strength gains ,weight loss, and cardio-vascular endurance will cease. This is because your body likes a state of balance and if you throw its balance off too often (like training 7days a week) your body will fight back by basically, shutting down. More is not better when it comes to training. You need a balance of the four aspects of fitness. Strength training, cardio, proper nutrition and rest are the keys to the success that you seek.

During my search, I've yet to find an article that says vitamin b12 is not an important vitamin. All of the articles I've read during my searches have stated the seriousness of a deficiency of vitamin b12. Before we get into the articles lets take a look at some of the vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms.

Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms, like those of many other treatable health conditions, can be virtually identical to age dementia symptoms, senile dementia symptoms and Alzheimer symptoms. As many as 20% of people over age 65 have low Vitamin B12 levels. Correcting the deficiency can help older people resume a full and normal lives.

Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Numbness and tingling of hands and feet

Weight Loss - A SAD state of affairs

This is a reprint from recent weight loss article by Dr. Jeffrey S. McCombs

As our country deals with the effects of past deregulation and the current financial crisis, I am struck by how America has also become deregulated in the area of its dietary choices and the resultant health crisis that is developing as a result. Sound dietary practices have been dismantled and replaced by eating whenever, whatever, and however it suits us in the moment. Common sense management of our food choices has been neglected in favour of fad diet fixes and Flintstone vitamins.

The wisdom of the body as a temple that needs to be cherished and cared for has been replaced by the philosophy of the body as an amusement park and I’ve got a season pass.

It’s no mistake that the acronym for the Standard American Diet is S.A.D. When America exports the dietary principles of S.A.D. to another country, a decline in the health of its people quickly follows. It also holds true for foreigners who immigrate here, as they quickly find out that their health declines and their weight increases when eating as the natives do. In all fairness, America should have signs at its entry borders that warn of the risks that go with adopting our S.A.D. lifestyle.

Using the government’s Body Mass Index (BMI) standard, a calculation based on height and weight, over 66% of Americans are overweight and 34% are obese. If current trends continue, by 2015, it’s estimated that 75% of American adults will be overweight or obese. By 2030, that estimate increases to more than 86 percent of adults, and by 2048, well let’s just say that finding a normal weight person will be like finding a needle in a haystack. The BMI standard isn’t without just criticism, as other body measurements are not considered. When considering the overall trend, however, it’s obvious that Americans are getting fatter and the associated illnesses and healthcare costs that accompany this trend are also on the rise. Being overweight increases our risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, cancer, liver and gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis, infertility, and various other related diseases and conditions. All of these are signs of lifestyle mismanagement, not medication deficiencies.

I imagine that a pharmaceutical company’s Board of Directors looks upon America’s sedentary lifestyle and standard diet much in the same way that a cannibal looks upon a newly caught fat missionary prior to feasting. Their gains are now our gains.

The pharmaceutical industry continues to propagate the philosophy of there’s nothing wrong with us. It’s not our fault. It’s just genetics, hormones, and other uncontrollable dysfunctions in our bodies that they will soon have a drug for. So, don’t worry, keep eating. For heaven’s sake, there’s no need to deprive your self of anything. Eat! You’ve earned it. Eat! You deserve it. Eat! It’s the holidays. Eat, eat, eat!

President-Elect Barack Obama keeps reminding us that we need to prepare ourselves for making sacrifices in order to correct the excesses of the past. This applies as much to our diet and lifestyle choices as much as it does to the economy. If sacrifices are to be made, then we can choose to sacrifice stupidity for wisdom. We can live up to our potential and leave behind the excuses and reasons for not taking care of ourselves.

Over half of Americans lead a sedentary lifestyle. The current government recommendation calls for 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. I have always thought that the government usually gets it half-right. Exercising 60 minutes 5 days a week is probably even better. Start where you are and go from there. Leave the “have to do it/be it/have it now” attitude behind. Evolve your desires to allow for gradual progress to have its impact.

In his book “What May Be” Piero Ferrucci states, “You must not follow your feelings. Your feelings must follow you.” We must begin to exhibit an emotional intelligence that directs our food choices. We must eat with a conscious awareness of how wish we to transform our bodies, for our bodies are transforming from moment-to-moment whether we like it or not. How it transforms can be up to us.

So as Thanksgiving approaches, I believe that it’s time to be thankful for the abundance and opportunities that we have as Americans. It’s time to invest in ourselves and our future. We can create something remarkable with our lives and share our life stories with others. We can be a nation of everyday heroes, ordinary people living extra-ordinary lives.

As an old adage states, “If not now, when? If not me, who?”
